Does your dog watch you take your pills in the morning? Does he or she stand there and raise his ears as they hear the rattling and shaking of your pills in your pill box? Certainly sounds like a fun toy to my pups and lets hope none drop on the floor cause as soon as one does they are both diving to see who can get the special treat mom dropped first. Then the panic sets in. Which pill was that and what the heck is it giong to do to my dog? The Pet Poison Hotline reports that nearly half their calls are made up of concerned owners whose pets have ingested one of their own medications. In light of that fact we researched and found the top five human medications and what the side effects iof these medication are for pets. The top five include Lipitor, Nexium, Plavix, Advair Diskus & Abilify. While three of the medications, Lipitor, Nexium and Plavix, have more mild effects including vomiting and diarrhea mainly the other two have more severe effects. Advair Diskus is an inhaler and due to the fact inhalers contain many doses the dog may be exposed to massive amounts of the drug if they chewed into it. That could possibly cause heart arrhythmias, agitation, elevated heart rate as well as possibly acute collapse. Low potassium levels are likely, vomiting and can be life-threatening is not treated immediately. Abilify, if ingested, can cause severe lethargy, vomiting, hyperthermia, rapid changes in heart rate and blood pressure and possibly seizures. If your pet ingests Abilify it is recommend you seek immediate veterinary care as well. So, the lesson of the day. Watch those meds to avoid possible issues with your furry friend.
